DIY + Fall Fashion

I know that for some of us unfortunate peeps, it's still about 100 degrees out here in sunny SoCal. However, in the spirit of September and Pumpkin Spice Lattes, I thought it would be fun to do a fun fall inspired fashion DIY! Huge thanks to Haley Bolena for the photos of my latest creation =)

I found this fab fabric at Jo-Anns for a great price of $9.99/yard and if you hold out for one of their weekly coupons, you can probably get it for even less! I only used one yard and after draping over my shoulders I put a pin in the marks where I wanted to make holes for my arms. I've never made of of these before and I don't own a dress form (unfortunately) so what I did was drap over a hanger and then on top of that, I hung up one of my long vests so I could simply trace over those arm holes onto my fabric. Then, just snip snip - cut my holes and voila, I was done!

I seriously love this print, and I think it could be so cute with a black tank or a blank long sleeve once it gets cooler =)

Go French!

I've seen this hairstyle on Pinterest for a couple months now, on these super fab models with stunning hair thinking, "wow that's pretty!" but not really thinking that I could pull it off in the same way. Well, when I saw my friend and makeup artist Amy Clarke post her French braid bun on instagram I thought, "well, now I have to at least try it!" So I did, and it was awesome, and now I do it all the time =) I wore it like this when I went vintage shopping with my friend Kathy of The Vintage Table Co. and she snapped a pic of it for me to share with you all!

Basically, all you do is throw your head upside down and start french braiding your hair from your  neck down. Till about the back top of your head and then grab your hair and throw it in a bun. Simple as that! If you don't know how to french braid, I found an awesome video tutorial for you HERE

And here is the front of the bun... and me meeting in real life my long time twitter crush/friend Hilary Rushford who was there all the way from New York!

Time for Style Me May!

Happy May beauties! It's a cloudy gray day over here in the SCV. Today I'd like to announce a super fun collaboration with Hilary Rushford of Dean Street Society. You may remember her from her fabulous guest post on packing for a honeymoon here.

She has put together this awesome Fashion + Photo challenge for us all and guess what?! Tasteful Tatters is part of the first giveaway!! So here's how it works:

1. Save the calendar below on your phone or print it out & tape it to your mirror. Use the prompt each day to inspire you to "wear, try or be" something from your wardrobe. Snap a photo & share via Instagram or Twitter using #StyleMeMarch.

2. There are no rules. If you're someone stressed out by commitment, you don't have to do it every day. Or, if you like to finish something beginning to end {Type-A hand raised high thankyouvery much}, use this community as your daily accountability to be creative & remarkable from May 1-31. Either way, try not to buy anything new for this challenge. If this uncovers a genuine hole in your closet that's one thing -- this isn't about a spending freeze -- but I hope it encourages you to make better use of & rediscover what you already have, rather than crave to buy more.

This round we also have the exciting addition of GIVEAWAYS!
Each week there'll be a "#StyleMe Monday" post in which the giveaway gal & I dole out some sweet prizes to a few girls who caught our eye that week on Instagram or Twitter. So be sure to add Dean Street Society to your blog roll to come back & see if you won! First giveaway coming next Monday ...
So how fun is that?! Now, you can read more about all the details here on Hilary's blog and be sure to share on instagram, facebook, & twitter so we can all be inspired by your style! Here are some snaps of my outfit for today's first challenge!

What I Wore//3

Happy Monday friends. Do you have a case of the Monday's today? I kinda do... I have a super busy week ahead of me and it just feels a little daunting. So in light of the business, I thought I'd pre- put together some outfits this weekend to take away some of the planning for the week. Dorky, I know.

So we've all seen the Gap, Target, Jcrew, Banana ads showing off the super cute brightly colored skinnys that are "all the rage" right now. But maybe you are like me, and were a little hesitant about putting a lightly colored denim on my legs with the possibility of making them look larger than normal. Can I get an amen?? Anyone? haha anyways, I thought I'd give it a whirl when I found these salmon babies at Crossroads and readily traded them for some old flares I had acquired from my Nordstrom sales days =) I opted for them because the denim was higher quality (so not stretchy thin) and they were a bit higher wasted. I paired them with a mix of neutrals and stripes and I love how it all looks together! What do you pair your colored denim with??

What I Wore // 2

Yay! It's Friday =) And boy and I excited for the weekend. Today's post features a beautiful necklace that was gifted to me by the wonderful Kathrina of Joe+Kathrina Photography. I just love this girl, and she packaged up this little cutie for my bday, so naturally I had to feature it!

This outfit is something I would wear out around town, running to the grocery store, the post office... maybe a little target run =) Simply comfy blue jeans, a black and white polka dot flowy top, and some casual but cute brown sandals/flats. Casual - with little color. Here's where the pop of color of this awesome cobalt blue necklace to add some fun! What do you wear out to run errands?

What I Wore: VDay Date

I'm so excited to introduce a new column here on the blog - a bit of fashion for you all! I figure I'm posting about Tasteful accessories and a lot of my DIY posts are related to fashion - why not some of my very own fashion favorites?? So I decided to kick off the series with my Pre-Valentines Day Date. Mr. H and I both had to work on Valentines, and now that we have some sanity back with the Fire Academy being over, we thought we would do a casual day date and celebrate Valentines on the Sunday before. We made red velvet pancakes, went to see The Vow, played in the park, took silly pictures - it was an awesome day. Since it wasn't actually valentines, I didn't want to dress all up in red or anything so instead I paired a flowy blouse over an adorable polka dot dress - add some tights and boots and there you go! What did you wear on Valentines Day??

dress: Reverie Market; Blouse: Foreign Exchange
